James 1:27 “Religion”
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
Religion comes in a hundred forms and fashions. Religion creates a Mother Theresa. Religion creates an Osama bin Laden. Religion is used to control. Religion is used to bless. There is incredible good and incredible evil created in the name of religion. God in Christ gives us a definition and priority focus on the subject of religion.
Sometimes we complicate life and get all wound up with the stresses and strains. Unfortunately, God isn’t too impressed with our busy, busy, go, go agenda. In fact, He sets a few priorities in this passage to help you simplify your week. Here you go: 1. Help an orphan, 2. Help a widow and 3. Keep yourself away from the world’s pollution.
It doesn’t sound like we need to overthink our assignments. Write these three to-do’s down. Take some simple toys and games to an orphanage, and watch their faces! Ask your pastor which widow could use some work around their house, and then invest an hour or two to helping them in a simple way. Take a few minutes to sit and listen to their story. Where will the time for this come from? Just stop a little world pollution; get up early on Saturday morning and spend a few hours working God’s priorities.
Religion made simple by a loving and caring God. Pretty simple definition, don’t you think?!
A personal message...
“These devotions were written to my four children, Christian, Mike, Allison and Alex. By the kids allowing these to be shared publicly, our hope is that the devotions will make a positive and eternal difference in the lives of other young people as they mature. Enjoy. Rick Isaacson”
