Proverbs 16:18

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. What is cockiness? It’s really over confidence mixed with an overblown belief that you are better than someone else or that your opinions are better than the other person. Pride is not a bad thing, if it is focused on who deserves the credit. God blessed you to be smart, to be athletic or to be any other “thing” you happen to be! The Bible says in everything, glorify God!

Don't Sweat It!

Proverbs 12:16

A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult.

God says we should have selective hearing. When someone insults you, it is very personal and offensive. The normal response is to defend yourself, and then attack the other person back. That’s the worldly way. But the Big Guy says the better approach is to show no reaction, to overlook it or act as if you didn’t hear the insult. The best reaction is no reaction, since the person doing the insulting is looking to make you feel bad. When you don’t react, it takes all the enjoyment away from the insulter.

This doesn’t mean you can’t analyze the insult later. If there’s a shred of truth in the message, we would be wise to adjust our behavior; but once we analyze any benefit we can take from the message, we are best to just overlook the insult and move on. It never helps to boil about it or try to return bad for bad. That just makes us fall for their attack and to their level if we react.

Never let an insult define you as bad. If you messed up, you simply made a bad decision. If you didn’t mess up, you have no reason to accept the criticism. The good news is when you have self-awareness, you learn the source of bad reactions and avoid them. It may be that you need to be more careful with your words. Or it may be you need to be more careful about the company you keep. Regardless, a short memory lowers the stress and increases the peace in your life…just analyze it, discern it, forgive it and forget it. It’s so much easier on you!

Don’t be a fool, be prudent and overlook that next insult! It’ll drive the messenger crazy!!
